The role of government in promoting efficiency and equity in the U.S. economy is investigated in this study. Conditions when markets fail to be efficient are explored. The problems with government allocation of resources are discussed in our paper. Economic analysis and public policies regarding education, poverty, the environment, financial regulations and other important issues is conducted to draw useful insights for policy makers.
Interdependencies among climate change,extreme weather events and built environment
Hurricanes, intense rainstorms, and floods are becoming more common, along with frequent intense heat waves. Have you ever wondered whether the enormous scale and damage from Hurricane Sandy had anything to do with climate change? This project examines the potential link between climate change and extreme weather events, the interdependency of natural and built environments, and urgent need for sustainable management. The study combines science, engineering, policy and social issues. Real-world efforts are investigated to study impacts of hurricanes and recovery endeavors and ways to prevent future losses.
Time-series forecasting models for stock price and variability
One of the methods of prediction & forecasting，which deals with time based data is Time Series Modeling. As the name suggests, it involves working on time (years, days, hours, minutes) based data, to derive hidden insights to make informed decision-making. This project is to apply the time series model in financial market and price the various assets including stock, bond and options. Applications using real world data are also conducted.
Structural Health Monitoring and signals analysis
This project introduces the topics with measurement and monitoring technolo-gies. The fundamental criteria for applications on concrete, steel and composite materials are studied, and basics on data interpretation and analy-sis for both static and dynamic monitor-ing are conducted. Finally, methods applicable to large spectrum of civil structures, such as bridges, buildings, geo-structures, and large structures are explored.
Risk communication among exposed people to weather-related risks
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administra-tion, NOAA, spends billions of dollars each year monitoring and predicting risk from environmental hazards to help people, communities, businesses, and governments find and use the right information to understand risk and make smart decisions. But that investment can only achieve its full potential value if risk is communicated effectively, empower-ing individuals and groups to pursue the response options that are best for them. Using research from NOAA and its external partners improves the ability to more effectively deliver weather and coastal warnings, communicate local hazards and risks, and provide guidance and decision support tools to stakeholders.
Comparison of statistical models and machine learning tools (e.g. random forest) in forecasting
The common objective behind using statistical models and machine learning tools is Learning from Data. Both these approaches aim to learn about the underlying phenomena by using data generated in the process. Machine learning is an algorithm that can learn from data without relying on rules-based programming. And statistical modeling is formalization of relationships between variables in the form of mathematical equations. We will see the difference of of these two tools in forecasting.

Machine learning is an important subfield in computer science category. It mainly studies the algorithm of pattern recognition of various data, and learn from the data to make prediction models. There are various approaches to achieve that, and among them, Random Forests is an effective and powerful algorithm for doing classification problems. In this project, the Random Forests algorithm is implemented in C++ and the features of the algorithm are explored by applying it on the MNIST Handwritten Digit Database.
Policy and Social Issues with the Development of the Boston Millennium Tower and Burnham Building
The Boston Development Authority approved a $615 million private development project to build the Millennium Tower. Plans for the Burnham building and creating 285,000 sq. ft. of retail and office space. Plans for the 625 ft. Millennium Tower include 60 stories, 442 condominiums, and up to 1.2 million sq. ft. of residential and retail space. The lower floors will be connected to the stores in the adjacent Burnham building. When complete, the tower will be the tallest residential building in the city. This project is part of a larger effort to reinvent and revamp the Downtown Crossing neighborhood as an upscale residential and commercial hub.
